Sumaiya Akter Popy is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences at the University of Chittagong. She has a keen interest in remote sensing through satellite imageries of ocean surface, particularly its application to the field of physical oceanography. She has been investigating ocean currents, sea surface temperatures, salinity and other hydro-biological properties of the Bay of Bengal integrating satellite and on board oceanographic data. Her research seeks to improve the understanding of ocean dynamics and global climate change and their impact on coastal and marine ecosystems and the communities living at the land’s edge.
Popy is proficient in several software tools and programming skills, notably R, Python and ArcGIS, which significantly enhance her ability to contribute ocean models development for interpreting oceanographic phenomena. She is taking part in an extensive OILAB program that aims to develop various oceanographic models for facilitating a deeper understanding of ocean dynamics and their implications for climate change and marine ecosystems in the Bay of Bengal regions.
