Kazi Md. Safayet Shabab is an enthusiastic student in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Science (Honors) program at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), University of Chittagong. He has keen interest in the field of oceanography. Particularly, he is investigating the physical factors that regulate the biological performances and ecological succession of corals and their associate species in turbid marine ecosystems.
Safayet has been working in OILAB underwater coral research group, who are conducting oceanographic survey for monitoring water quality and mapping the coral habitats in the St. Martin’s Island MPA under coastal habitat models development program (HMDP). Wide range of environmental data and bathymetric data with high resolution have been collected through oceanographic survey, which are going to use for habitat suitability model development for hermatypic and ahermatypic corals. Safayet uses Python and R programing skills for model exercises along with ArcGIS for geo-spatial analysis. Apart from his scholarly and investigative duties, Safayet holds the position of ‘Joint Organizing Secretary’ for the Chittagong University Nature Club (CUNC). In this capacity, he assists in planning campaigns and activities that raise environmental consciousness and aid in the preservation of the environment.
