OiLAB has created various field and lab based facilities aiming multiple research programs in the field of ocean sciences (see Ocean Innovation Programs & Projects). OiLAB has indoor wet lab with a variety facilities: (1) water holding tanks ranging from 3 to 1000 L; (2) RAS facility for recirculating sea water system; (3) algal photo-bioreactor; (4) microcosms for various marine ecosystems. A diverse array of finfish, crustaceans, echinoderms, bivalves, gastropods,
micro-algae and zooplankton are kept in this captivity for various studies. There are several workstations that can host over 25 research students. The lab has a dedicated microscopic imaging lab equipped with compound and dissecting microscopes mounted by camera and imaging software.The lab has all the required facilities for collecting and analyzing seawater and sediment samples with sufficient lab supplies and reagents. OiLAB also has different sampling instruments and gears to collect all sorts of biological samples from sediment and water from the coastal, nearshore and offshore areas.
OiLAB uses multiple portable sensors including CTDs, SONAR, transducers and other bio-acoustic instruments for ocean data collection, which are used to validate different ocean models. The lab has developed variety of ocean hydrodynamic models using own skills through multiple packages of MATLAB, Python, and R programs. The lab also use remote sensing and GIS tools for developing geo-spatial models for explaining physical, chemical and biological processes of the Bay of Bengal. Moreover, OILAB is oriented with the other sophisticated geo-physical and biological labs of the Institute of Marine Sciences for sharing lab resources on demand.
